11 - What Colour ?

Trying to identify the correct shade of red has proved to be quite difficult. The car had previously had an all over re spray of an Austin Morris red, which had faded and weathered badly.

Acquiring decent colour chips was also problematic. The colours for the later Supervans & Regals were slightly different. Trying to look at online chips was no help and only muddied the waters since no one seemed to have the mixes on record.

In the end I decided to find a secluded patch of the original colour and have it matched. The best option was to send off the inspection panel for the rear number plate light. The resulting colour is shown on a model in comparison to how the car looked at the time.

Comparisons of this paint alongside an off the shelf Post Office red reveled a distinct difference. I tested this on a restored brake pedal cover ( which it turned out my 3/25 never had fitted)

I October 2017 I was given the opportunity to compare another shade. It is believed that my 3/25 was out shopped in a shade known as London Red. Comparing colours is quite difficult as in some light conditions it appears orangey & in indirect light a deeper red. Here is a comparison with a colour chip for the London Red used on Robins. I have used a clip from the car & it shows as darker, with the Robin London Red being much more Orange. Colour matching early Regals (& their 4 wheeled sister the Rebel) can be quite a task. If matching a van it becomes more difficult as they were delivered in primer and painted by the dealership, so shades could have varied according to local supplies.

We will catch up with the paintwork later once the extensive bodywork is done.
