Not the impossible magician but the Lucas C40. Having a selection of these available I took a couple apart & selected the best one for restoration. However, the task was not as straightforward as expected. Eventually I worked out the unit consisted of the case, faceplate with friction fit bearing & rear plate that gave access to the rear bronze bush & the spring operated carbon brushes. Each dynamo was slightly different in the bearing set up with some utilising separate covers for each side of the bearing and others using a built in shield. Therefore replacing the bearing with a new shielded variety meant some internet research and purchases. The old bearing was pushed out and the new one pushed in. Fitting the new windings onto the bearing involved some effort & the use of a freezer to shrink the shaft. The brushes were badly worn and on one dynamo they were none existent. A service kit is available so brand new ones with associated wiring were purchased & fitted. With a good clean and a lick of paint, the unit was re assembled and a rudimentary test for Volts carried out. Then a cleaned up pulley wheel and cooling fan assembly was selected from the pile. Here the unit is ready for fitting to the engine when done. Importantly I had bagged up the original bolts and the spacer, which will be required at the front mounting.
