26 - Badges

The chrome badges were found to be pitted. Although it is possible to source some replacement parts, I explored options to have the existing badges re chromed. The expense varied but I gathered up all the best condition badges & sent them off for assessment. After a considerable time a phone call revealed the items had been put on a shelf & forgotten about ! Eventually all the badges were assessed and the best items received a polishing. With no re chroming that reduced the cost considerably.

The saloon features 3 shield type badges of the earlier "3R" type. This logo was too close to the Mercedes logo and the star pattern was later dropped & the central part was blue. Phoebe had lost her nose badge at some point & trying to source replacements is very very difficult. Even poor quality early badges are hard to find. Nonetheless, with some patience and a bit of expense a NOS badge was found.

The existing badges mounted to the pillar featured faded & peeling paint. Removing them was a delicate operation as the plastic had turned quite brittle. Predictably the plastic pins broke in some places, but not that you would notice from the front.

The plastic received a light polish whilst the red shade was matched by rummaging through my extensive enamel paint collection. The model railway box provided EWS maroon.
